#18: Bakersfield & The Central Valley
"California Cottonfields" by Merle Haggard

Click the arrow for music
Much has been written about the great depression and the Grapes Of Wrath migration to California's Central Valley. The war finally put everyone to work, and by the '50s & '60s country musicians were entertaining in honky-tonks up and down Highway 99. There was a hard edged purity to their sound which was distinctly different from the L.A. scene just over the Grapevine. Capitol Records signed many of the artists to recording contracts and Bakersfield artists soon made up the bulk of their country music roster. I picked one album per artist that was either recorded in or by a Bakersfield star.
